# Understanding Network Devices

We use internet everyday at home, offices and many other places. But any time when you are using internet Do you thing that how does internet reaches our home or office and how we are able to use the it.

In this article I am going to explain that how multiple devices work together to provide internet connection, starting from the internet itself and ending at our devices.

## What is Internet ?

The internet is not a machine or a single network. It is a global network made up of millions of smaller networks connected together.

## Why we need networking devices

When we use the internet at home or in an office then we are actually using a small local network of the internet that needs a way to talk to this giant network or global network.
Local network is a network which covers only small area like office, home building etc.
A local network cannot communicate with the internet directly on its own.

To make this communication possible, different networking devices are used and each one has a specific responsibility. Some devices act as an entry point, some handle the traffic, some manage data inside the network and some focus on security.

## Networking Devices

In the previous section, we saw that a home or office network simply known as local network needed a networking devices to communicate the internet and each devices perform some specific task so let’s start from first device which name is ‘Modem’.

### Modem

A modem has only one main responsibility. It converts the signal coming from the ISP(Internet service provider who provide the internet service) into a form that our local network devices like laptop and mobile can understand. At the same time, it also converts the signal coming from our local devices into a form that the ISP can understand.

Because of this behavior, a modem works like a **translator**. It translates two different types of signals. One signal comes from the ISP, which is called an analog signal. The other signal comes from our network devices, which is called a digital signal. By converting these signals, the modem makes communication between the internet and our devices possible.

### Router

Router makes sure that internet data packets(smaller chunks of the data) sends the correct local network. Because there can be different local networks based on size and number of devices, the router take care that data packets goes to the correct network but sometime if we have only one network so router can directly sends the packets to the devices.

For Example:- Router is like a GPS Navigator which guide you where we have to go.

### Hub

A hub is used to connect multiple devices and it sends data packets to all connected devices.

For example:- Hub is work same as loudspeaker in a room, which sends audio to all available people.

### Switch

A network switch forwards data packets between devices. Switch send packets directly to devices, rather than sending them to networks like a router does.

For Example:- Suppose you order food from any food delivery app and rider come and send the food packet directly to you, switches works same way as.

### Firewall

A firewall is a network security system that works between your private or local network (like home or office network) and the internet. It checks all incoming and outgoing data and allows or blocks it based on security rules.

**For Example:**
Suppose you live in a society where a security guard checks every person before allowing them inside. If the person is known and allowed, the guard lets them enter. If the person looks suspicious, the guard stops them. Firewall works in the same way by allowing safe data and blocking unsafe data.

### Load Balancer

A load balancer is a network device that distributes traffic across multiple servers. When a website gets a lot of users at the same time, the load balancer helps by sharing the traffic so that no single server gets overloaded. This is mostly used in the system design.

**For Example:**
Suppose there is only one counter in a shop and suddenly many customers comes this will creates a lone line and customer has to wait his turn so Here we can opens multiple counters and send some customers to the different counter so that user don’t have to wait. A load balancer works the same way for servers.

### How all these devices work together in a real-world setup

In a real world setup, all these network devices work together step by step to give us internet access. First, the internet comes from the ISP and enters the network through the modem. Then the router decides which local network should receive the data. After that, the firewall checks whether the data is safe or not. Inside the local network, the switch delivers the data to the exact device that requested it. If the website has many users, a load balancer distributes the traffic across multiple servers so everything works smoothly.

Understanding how these network devices work together helps us see what actually happens behind the scenes when we use the internet. Each device has its own role, and when they work properly, our internet feels fast and reliable. This basic knowledge is useful not only for networking but also for building and understanding real world software systems. Once you understand this flow, many internet problems start to make more sense.
